Mcdonald’s goal was the crucial score, as the All-ireland holders were resigned to their second defeat of the season already, after their reversal against Limerick in the previous round.
Joe Canning gave a stunning personal display but despite 0-10 from him and further five points from Conor Whelan, Galway lost to davy Fitzgerald’s side in the league for the second year running.
Mcdonald struck at the end of the first half, where Wexford took a narrow 1-9 to 0-11 lead into half-time, in front of the 7,200 in attendance.
it was level at 0-5 to 0-5 after 18 minutes with Canning, Johnny Coen, Conor Whelan and Joseph Cooney all scoring for Galway. But Wexford hit back through Kevin Foley, diarmuid O'Keeffe, Lee Chin, Paudie Foley and rory O'Connor.
Wexford went three clear with ten minutes remaining in the first half but then Galway hit four points in a row, as Coen, Whelan and Cathal Mannion (two) found their range.
But Mcdonald scored his goal in the 33rd minute and that would the decisive score late
