(perceived at the time) opportunities and I would have saved years of time; time I will never get back. If I had known what I now know, I would have reached my end goal years earlier and it would have given me much more opportunity for growth and more profitability in my business.
This book is not a marketing book, a how-to-get-more-sales book, how to get rich, nor a book on how to be a better manager (I think we put far too much management theory into our businesses anyway). It’s a simple book taken from experiences in building up a company that began naively with a flawed base. By implementing the principles in this book such as systemising, the 80/20 rule, model focus, strong financial control, goal setting and planning it enabled me to sell the business within seven weeks of meeting the buyer. Although selling the business was only one of my goals, it would not have happened had it not been for the principles I had applied which made the business even more successful and desirable to the eventual purchaser.
The ‘Paulisms’ part of the title of this book came about one day when my team ran a fun competition of putting my acronyms up on a whiteboard and having people guess my ‘isms’, for example TIM is Time in Motion and COA is Curse of Assumption. The emphasis of this book is on being simple and being able to understand the Paulisms, which are the ‘gold nuggets’ to use in your own business. The learnings aren’t from theory; they are from real-life experiences. Nuggets are small pieces of gold formed by liquid gold under a process that takes place under pressure. Many of the gold nuggets in this book were a result of situations under pressure and dealing with difficult times. As a result, positive gold nuggets popped out the other side and became incredibly invaluable learnings for small businesses. I have had great enjoyment in writing this
