A young contractor was starting out, and as per the chapter on building loyalty with tradespeople, I put him on 7-day payment until he was established. What I did say to him was that business is about swings and roundabouts. ‘We are giving you a start to make some serious money, but don’t get greedy, as one day you will get bigger than the opportunity. You will want more money, or a job goes wrong and you want to charge for your time and you will forget the leg up!’ Well, it took about a month before he was asking my team for more money! I said to just tell him to make up his mind whether he wants to do the work or not as we will find someone else. He carried on until...
He was young and needed mentoring, thus my patience. Anyway, we needed resource. But we started to have service issues. We had given him an amazing opportunity and he was not communicating. He was too busy enjoying his amazing cash flow that we were now giving him (probably on alcohol, drugs and whatever else). I simply rang him up and said, ‘John (let’s call him that), you have an amazing opportunity, but I’m hearing of service and communication
