CENTREPORT WELLINGTON - CCTV UPGRADE
CentrePort Wellington needed a security partner that could deliver a complex and technologically advanced

new CCTV (Closed Circuit Television) system.
In 2012, an independent review of the more than 20-year- old CentrePort CCTV system was undertaken. It was concluded that the existing system was no longer fit for purpose. CentrePort went to the market to find a company with the experience and innovation to design and install an extensive CCTV system to cover its wide-ranging assets, wharves, and transport hubs.
Red Wolf successfully won the CentrePort CCTV Upgrade tender. The first thing we did was undertake a full review of the 93 cameras’ fields of view with the five different business units before any camera was installed. We made sure that each business unit fully understood what each of their cameras’ field of view was going to see, and to what detail. This was a very important step to take for
an environment such as a port – where access to various locations has to be coordinated with a number of different business units.
Nobody could afford to go to these locations multiple times to get camera views right. So with the camera fields of view understood before going, Red Wolf achieved a 95% “do it once, do it right” approach to each camera install location.
CentrePort is a challenging site. It is very exposed to the Wellington weather, is a geographically large, and has a lot of large moving objects, ships, straddle cranes and trucks – making it difficult to get communication from some locations.
“The intrepid fence system detects the exact location on the perimeter fence where an intruder is jumping, cutting, or even touching, then spins the PTZ camera(s) associated to that zone towards that location.”
Red Wolf used a combination of fibre and radio to create a CCTV network capable of streaming and managing the new 18 Pan/Tilt/Zoom (PTZ) and 75 fixed high-definition cameras.
We also interfaced the new perimeter PTZ cameras into an intrepid fence system. This detects the exact location on the perimeter fence where an intruder is jumping, cutting, or even touching, then spins the PTZ camera(s) associated to that zone towards that location. It also pops the cameras onto full screen in the security hut for the onsite guards to respond to. This is what we call proactive CCTV.
With the upgraded CCTV system, CentrePort made large savings in their wharf repair. When damage is found, they can review the well-positioned and focused high-definition cameras to see which vessel caused it and then invoice their shipping company.
The logistics business unit can also use the cameras to locate and track containers and freight reducing labour hours on the ground.
Red Wolf is proud of its strong partnership with CentrePort – achieved through good communication, precise project management, and reliable ongoing support.
