         GREATER WELLINGTON RAIL LIMITED
GREATER WELLINGTON RAIL LIMITED (GWRL) - OMNIBUS SECURITY WORKS AND SERVICES Red Wolf worked closely with GWRL to completely overhaul and revolutionise their electronic
23
    security components.
GWRL was looking for an innovative security partner
to provide electronic security solutions to two of their hardest to secure sites, and bring them online for remote management. The electronic security component was initially to provide preventative maintenance to 18 existing sites, with around 200 cameras and multiple intruder detection systems.
Previous ISP proposals to carry out the work had proven
to be costly, so Red Wolf used our expertise and strong partnerships to see if we could broker a more cost-effective solution.
Upon winning the Omnibus Security Works and Services tender, we undertook a full audit of the infrastructure in place. We found that providing fibre to the platforms would be essential in the design of a centralised Rail Monitoring Centre. Alongside GWRL, we developed a strategy to network all current sites by delivering fibre to the 34
train station platforms.
This project required us to liaise with an external ISP
that had a “think outside the box” approach to their service provision. We brought in one that was up to the task, and assisted them to understand and deliver a tiered bandwidth model, and the associated build work. Together we were able to secure huge savings for GWRL on the initial proposals, and we started building.
Installation of the fibre network also allowed Red Wolf to offer value-added services to GWRL, via tier one secure technical fault tracking from our Security Network Operations Centre (SNOC). This achieved significant ongoing cost savings for their call outs.
They now have more than 700 cameras, over 30 PA and Duress systems, intruder detection on stabling yard fence lines, and video analytics to support detection. All of these are networked back to the central control room and can be viewed in real time.
The stability of the new fibre network infrastructure has also allowed GWRL – in conjunction with Red Wolf – to expand their security infrastructure. They now have more than 700 cameras, over 30 PA and Duress systems, intruder detection on stabling yard fence lines, and video analytics to support detection. All of these are networked back to the central control room and can be viewed in real time.
This was a significant body of work undertaken alongside GWRL, and one that required the joint relationship approach we pride ourselves on. Red Wolf’s commitment to help establish the redundant fibre loop that GWRL (and now Greater Wellington Regional Council) rely on exceeded our contractual responsibilities. We were able to advise GWRL on the emerging technologies they could utilise in their environment, and then implement them. They now have an effective, future-proofed, and robust network foundation.
