Philanthropy is an important component of student success. Philanthropy opens doors and creates access points for high-impact student engagement.
In this issue of Access, we hear from some of our philanthropic supporters who promote educational opportunities at Fresno State. The article, "Why do we Give" introduces us to stories of family connections and passion for educational attainment. We will hear from Chuck and Lois Rigsbee, Mike and Jean Fetter- hoff, Carol Munshower and Lanny Larson, all of whom
are stalwart supporters of educational programs that better our community. What struck me when reading their letters is that each reflects on their vision for a better community through education.
Supporters like Chuck, Lois, Mike, Jean, Carol and Lanny, support our Central Val- ley with their commitments to enrich the lives of campus and community. Fresno State lauds their involvement as they make a direct impact on student success. They, along with Continuing and Global Education’s own small army of donors, create opportunities that result in transformation.
We celebrate the successes of our newest Fresno State graduates who began their Bulldog career as students in our Veterans Education Program. Supporters of the Veterans Education Program may remember Tyler Verburg, Neil Morgan, Chad Gilbuena and Andres Nunez. Tyler (USMC) graduated Fresno State summa cum laude (with highest honors) and is pursuing a career in law enforcement. Neil (U.S. Coast Guard) celebrated his 40th birthday by receiving his Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering and becoming a dad, while Chad (US Army) parlayed his enlisted career and new baccalaureate degree into a new role of com- missioned officer (2nd Lt). Andres (US Army) graduated Fresno State cum laude (with honors), with a degree in Business with an Accounting option.
We next turn our attention to one of the many programs operated in the Division of Continuing and Global Education, the School Nurse Credential program. Grad- uates of this specialized credential typically work with children in K-12. We are fortunate to meet two graduates, Xia Torres and Joseph Crisostomo and learn how the program prepared each for their careers.
We also meet the newest awardees of the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute’s 15 OVER 50 recognition, which celebrates those who are making a difference in our community. We meet Sonali Biswas from India, who appears on our cover. Sonali chose to study at California State University, Fresno because of the quality of our campus’ academics and the generosity of our donors. Sonali is a Masters student studying in Biology and recipient of the Muhareb Family grant that helps recruit gifted international students.
The articles that pack the pages of this Access magazine are filled with student success. We hope you are inspired by the stories you read within these pages. And if you are so inclined, please join Continuing and Global Education’s growing ranks of supporters that invest in creating future opportunities that benefit our community.
Kind regards,
Scott D. Moore, P h.D.
