Vaughan Metropolitan Centre is a 100-acre site at the northern suburb of Toronto. The proposal mixed-use development would establish a more substantial urban presence in The City of Vaughan predominantly suburban context. It is important that with design we encourage the right scale, hierarchy, typology and morphology of streets, buildings, squares and gardens we find locally. Also as a new vibrant town centre consisting of streets and spaces well connected to its surroundings, it would create a destination for a much broader neighbourhood with required density and a diverse and vibrant selection of uses.
Urban blocks are formed with an elongated grid in E/W direction of the primary access. Each block comprises of low-rise, mid-rise and high-rise buildings defined with streets and squares organised in distinct neighbourhoods within 5 min walk between them. Neighbourhoods are organised around a Large Park created in the form of an artificial mound. The mound utilised cut and fill ratio of site excavations. It provides the main parking area for residents and directly connects northern and southern neighbourhoods while covering central vehicular access. At the West end, the Large Park is contained with a block of buildings in the form of crescent while to the East continues with the typical urban grain.
