JINDAL RESIDENCE, MUMBAI, INDIA
The location of this building is one of the most attractive sites in Mumbai with undisturbed views of the Indian ocean, and at the same time is constrained on the long narrow plot flanked with tall buildings on each side of it. The proximity of the ocean reflects in the design and articulation of the rear of the building. Simultaneously, constraints related to the immediate neighbourhood guided appearance of the other aspects of the building.
From the street, the building is announced with porte-cochere, while robust and restrained elevation has been dotted with regimented small openings and upscaled entrance door. The building’s sides are almost blind with strips of glass brick walls and loggia recesses providing indirect daylight and preserving privacy.
It is at the rear where building transforms. From an introvert, enclosed entity into a wide-open, magnificent glazed structure with stepping terraces and awnings, all dressed up into the naval appearance as it was back of the anchored boat.
The building will house a collection of paintings and artwork exhibited in the central gallery which connects the main entrance lobby and grand reception room. When approached from the main lobby towards the reception room, each bay of the gallery
becomes wider and taller, which deforms perspective. Instead of narrowing, sidewalls of the gallery appear parallel, which makes the whole experience memorable and unique.
