Health Committee Report:

After decades of Chows being susceptible to anesthesia and sedatives, CCCI is now in a position to
do something about it. Through your donations to the AKC CHF and by sending Purina purchase
receipts to the Purina Pro Club’s Parent Club Partnership, CCCI members accumulated approxi-
mately $20,000 in our CHF Donor Advised Fund (DAF), which goes toward CHF Research Grants.
Based on prior genetic research by Dr. Court, breeders of a line of Chows that go back to a popular
sire have reported adverse affects from anesthesia, particularly acepromazine and three other anes-
thesia’s. In several Chows down from this sire, a unique mutation was discovered in the CYP2B11
gene (7 of 17 Chows were tested). Additionally, a different mutation in this same CYP2B11 gene is
known to create adverse anesthesia affects in sight hounds.
Consequently, the CCCI Board voted to use $18,491 of the DAF funds to do further genetic re-
search on this gene. The objectives of this study is to confirm that this unique Chow gene mutation
does cause the anesthesia issues, make evidence-based recommendations about drugs to be avoided
or dosages to modified, and determine the scope of this mutation in other lines of Chows and other
breeds. However, based on past experience with other studies, it was difficult to get DNA samples
from our member’s Chows, so they may be collected at Chow specialties and if necessary from the
OFA DNA repository, advertising in CHF newsletters and in Chow Life. Since there were no CCCI
DAF donations for a while, we are eligible for CHF “Lapsed Donor” matching funds from the AKC,
which go into the CHF general research fund, which effectively makes our donation approximately
$40,000.
