A Loving Godfather
“I must be getting older, but I don't have to grow up.” Laughs Beau Loughlin. He has not. That’s why I am nominating Beau Loughlin for the One Hundred People Project, because he thinks like a kid and seems to never grow older. Also, because he is loving, kind, and a person I love to be with. He inspires me to reach my goals in life and live to the fullest.
Beau was born in Honolulu, Hawaii on November 6, 1941. He was just a month old when Pearl Harbor was bombed by Japanese planes. His mother put him under the sink so that he would stay protected. Years after, his family moved to the coast of California. His earliest memory was when he was five years old. He stepped on a bee and got stung on the foot.
Although his days are relaxed because he is retired, he loves to work in his yard on his flowers, vegetables, and pond and in his shop on his antique panel wagon. He has a kid-like energy that radiates to those around him. He works hard and plays hard.
What is interesting about Beau are his hobbies. When his family moved to the California coast he discovered windsurfing. He loves to go dirt biking, his group of dirt biking friends goes often outside the city limits of Mount Vernon to enjoy the trails.
Beau and I became friends when I was young. He babysat me (by himself) so that my parents could go out on their anniversary when I was eight weeks old. When my family went through dramatic changes, Beau and his wife supported our family, so much so that we lived with them for two weeks. He goes to my games; soccer when I was little, now basketball and golf. He has been grandfatherly to me though my own grandfather lives on the other side of the world. When I was little and my parents went away on a cruise to Alaska, my sisters and I stayed with Beau and his wife at their house where I “helped” him around the house. I was 15 months old.
Beau has two daughters and enjoys being a parent in so many ways. He loves to build things and help them with their projects. He loves being happy for kid’s success. He has a strong relationship with God, and every morning reads a devotional. He also does volunteer work around Skagit county.
When Beau met the woman of his dreams he cut back on windsurfing and playing and decided to get a full-time job to support the two of them. He wanted to study electronics because his older brother failed, he took on the challenge, and loved it. After college, he worked at Boeing and was a flight simulator technician. This was a fun thing to do for him, and he loved how he got to work indoors instead of outside in the weather. His second career was learning to become a professor at Skagit Valley College and teaching math and computer science. Beau says that the world needs love because that is what God wants for all of us. His advice is to never give up because good things will come when you work hard at the things you love.
Beau was down the hall in the waiting room of the hospital with my sister when I was born. He cares about my family as if he were my blood, my uncle, my grandfather. He helps people and works hard. He loves to play hard too. He is an inspiring role model for me and the best godfather to have in the world.
