The Owl
When I think of night, I think of laying in bed at home, watching TV, maybe getting a snack. When my grandma, Deborah Radcliff, thinks of night she thinks of her job as a nurse at the Mt. Vernon Hospital. I decided to honor Deb because she is a modest, powerful woman. Even at -undisclosed- years, she can still work two jobs! She’s a nurse by night and works at a horse barn by day.
As a child, Deb grew up in Gaylord, Michigan. She has many, many snake stories of her childhood ranging from her brother throwing rocks to simply turning over a hay bail. One very special memory that Deborah has is from when she was 5 years old, her brother wrapped his coat around her arms and led her out to the barn to watch her first foal (baby horse) being born. Children picked on Deb a lot during school just because she was somewhat overweight, so at school she was singled out. Yet throughout school and the teasing, she always had a family to go back to for love and support.
After high school Deb tried out a bagger job at a grocery store, but, that didn’t work out so well. Afterwards she found her way to nursing and has been a nurse ever since. One thing that she finds really cool about being a nurse at a hospital is listening to the stories of the elderly patients like army vets. “As an adult, what is your happiest or proudest moment?” I asked while interviewing my grandma. “When I had her.” She points at my mother with a smile across her face (no tears were shed during or after this interview... ok maybe a couple).
Grandma Debbie has always had a very kind heart and been a thoughtful person to me, she’s never sure what I like to eat, or my brother, or sister, so she takes us to the grocery store to pick out the food. Her biggest goal is to win the lottery, and buy Rajah (a beautiful horse she sees regularly during her part-time job working at a horse barn). Then to take my parents and siblings and I on a month-long vacation.
Deborah Radcliff is a kind hearted, thoughtful person who truly deserves to be honored in the Life Legacy Project.
