HERITAGE AND KNOWLEDGEBASE
ImHotep, called Imuthes (Ιμυθες) by the Greeks,
fl. 27th c. BCE (2655-2600 BCE). Physician, architect, engineer, court counselor; taught disease as a natural effect of one’s living out of alignment with Natural Law (Ma’at), not a punishment from the Neteru (deities). First historic human to be deified as a god of medicine; physician deity, as adopted son of Sekhmet and Ptah. Widespread temples of prayer, healing and intervention throughout the eastern Mediterranean dedicated to him over many centuries; considered by many as the origin of the healing mystery cults that became the Asklepian lineage. In considering the emergence of the medical profession, Sir William Osler described Imhotep as: “The first figure of a physician to stand out clearly from the mists of antiquity.” Contemporary HesiRe considered by some as the earliest known physician.
Merit-Ptah (”Beloved of Ptah”), chief court physician during the Second Dynasty of ancient Egypt; first woman known by name in the history of the field of medicine, and possibly the first named woman in Western science.
