OUR PATIENTS
Celebrating Recovery
Some laughed, cried, gave standing ovations, practiced yoga and ate cake, and some did all the
above as 12 participants of Mercy Care’s Peer Support Program for women showcased their
self-care kits and narrated their journey to wellness.
At our clinic located at City of Refuge, the Peer Support Program focuses on development of
life skills and healthy coping mechanisms for women recovering from abuse, addiction, anger
and loss of self-esteem and removes barriers to an independent and healthy lifestyle. Women
meet four days a week, five hours a day for six months working on self-care techniques that
aid in their recovery. They perform random acts of kindness in the community; volunteer at
nursing homes and food banks; learn to eat healthy and exercise; complete art therapy and
community gardening classes; and graduate from classes like anger and mood management.
