Also playing as the designated hitter, he hit a  rst-inning homer (his eighth Opening Day home run) to help the Cleveland Indians beat the New York Yankees, 5-3, before a home crowd of 56,715. Rachel Robinson, the widow of Jackie Robinson, threw out the  rst pitch.

Career at-bat in which relief pitcher Jose Sosa of the Houston Astros hit a home run, on July 30. He had only eight more at-bats in the majors and did not hit another homer.
