COMMON SCAMS AND HOW THEY WORK
SCAM WHAT HAPPENS HOW TO STAY SAFE
Social Security, Medicare, and other government benefits
The scam works by overwhelming you with claims of scary, immediate dangers, which you need to solve right away by providing sensitive, personal information to the person on the other end of the call.
For instance, a scammer calls or emails asking you to verify your Medicare number, perhaps because of a
change from paper to plastic cards or to add a chip to the card.
Another scam involves offering you a less expensive plan or better
benefits, but they need to know your Medicare number first.
(They do not need this information in order to
offer you a better plan.)
Hang up the phone.
Don’t call any numbers left in a voice or text message or email. Call the customer service number of the agency itself and describe what is going on. You can trust the information you ask for more than the information people give you out of the blue.
Never, ever give out your account number, Social Security Number, or any other sensitive personal information unless you know the person asking for it is legitimate.
