one was kissing it, if it is the practice in your lodge, go right ahead, but make sure that the hilt is suitably cleaned before doing so, and if the hilt is rusted, please refrain.
The walk or the advancement has been the subject of great debate. The style which looks best is the one which the sword bearer does perfectly. The dignitary is not obliged to copy the sword bearer; therefore, it is pertinent to suggest that whatever the method, it should look like it is emanating from the character of the sword bearer rather than appear as an uncomfortable, oversized and recently acquired bad habit.
Since the sword bearer is at a vantage position, he is most likely to be photographed. His left arm at this and all other moments should be along the body with the fingers formed in a fist along the seams of his trousers. The left arm need not and indeed should not be swung as most of our temples will not be suitable for the extra space required for this display. The sword bearer should look straight ahead and have a generally serious expression.
All smiles, winks of the eye and acknowledgements of brethren can be safely reciprocated at the fraternity time, before or after the meeting. The writer will have you believe that the more the sword bearer thinks of the importance of his office, the more inclined will the brethren be of seeing him display his wares at subsequent nay all meetings.
Do the office of the Sword Bearer a favor, encourage him to perform, and be prepared to enjoy while he does his office justice.
This write up is not the work of fiction, this writer enjoyed his stint as the Grand Sword Bearer, in the not too distant past, and wishes every Sword Bearer does so too at the Lodge, Region and Grand Lodge level. Please do share your views and may the office of the Sword Bearer occupy a prominent place in your life.
