BD and AFCC spreading knowledge and best practices in Africa
Context:
The African Federation for Clinical Chemistry (AFCC) is an organization of Clinical Chemistry Societies in the African continent, and a regional society of the International Federation of Clinical Chemistry (IFCC).
Long standing relationships with AFCC members, who are PAS Key Opinion Leaders, allowed BD to collaborate with the AFCC to enhance the knowledge base of Laboratory Technologists across East and Southern Africa.
Background:
With a common aim to educated Laboratory and Phlebotomy personnel across Africa, a collaboration with the AFCC allowed BD to widen our target base.
Strategy:
Using a long existing relationship with Prof Rajiv Erasmus, BD was able to participate in 2 workshops, organized by the AFCC and sponsored by BD.
The workshops took place in Bahar Dir (Ethiopia) and Lusaka (Zambia).
The aim was to leverage the Life Science approach in Africa, by presenting in the main conference, as well as moderating a workshop.
The workshop included presentations on Best Practices by PAS, DS and BDB experts.
During these workshops, the attendees, which included Laboratory Technologists, Laboratory Managers, Doctors and Nurses, were exposed to international speakers as well as continuous BD presence.
The international speakers included Prof Howard Morris (former Chairman of the
Challenges:
There were very few challenges in these workshops, however, the challenge still remains to ensure that Best Practices are adhered to in these countries, and that BD can provide the necessary training and products when needed.
Key Learnings:
Continuous relationship building with KOL’s and extended members of any Association or Federation, is of key importance when strategies are applied in the Africa region.
Way Forward:
BD will continue the partners with the AFCC and Prof Rajiv Erasmus, respectively.
Follow up trainings and visits to attendees of these workshops are imperative to ensure implementation of Best Practices.
Revenue Outlook:
The increased sales for PPT tubes as well as Eclipse PAH in FY18 is from the impact of these workshops.
188% PPT revenue growth in Ethiopia 274% PPT revenue in Uganda
Apart from the above, more relationships have been formed, which are in development and will allow BD to penetrate the respective markets successfully.
