Optical Storage Devices
Initially, CDs were read-only, but newer technology allows users to record as
well. CDs will probably continue to be popular for music recording and
playback. A newer technology, the Digital Versatile Disc (DVD), stores much

more in the same space and is used for playing back movies.

               Storage Capacity

Storage capacity is the amount of information that can be stored on a storage
device. Storage capacity is measured in bytes. A byte is a group of 8 bits. A bit
is a zero (0) or one (1). The smallest unit of data the computer can take is Bit.
                          8bits ………………………...….1 bytes
                          1024byte…………………...…...1 kilobyte (KB)

Note; 1024 bytes can be rounded to one thousand (1000) bytes for the sake of
               simplicity.
                          1000KB ………………………..1 Megabyte (MB) ‘Is roughly 1million
                          bytes.’
                          1000MB ……………………….1 Gigabyte (GB) ‘roughly 1billion
                          bytes.’
                          1000GB……………………….. 1 Terabyte (TB).

Reasons for Storing Information / Documents

                          For future use
                          For safe keeping
To save time of creating the same information in the future
