NEWS IN BRIEF
THOUSANDS rally in support for Israel around the world
As a large pro-Palestinian event took place on the streets of London, there were thousands more waving Israel flags in cities around the world on the weekend of 17-18 October with pro- Israel events in London, New York, Paris, Madrid and Rome.
Iran shows off secret underground missile base
Iran’s powerful Revolutionary Guard has revealed footage of a secret missile base in an underground tunnel deep in a mountain side.
The video, aired on semi-official Fars TV and set to rousing music, shows an extensive tunnel packed with medium- and long-range missiles and launcher units and what appears to be officers walking over flags of Israel and the United States painted on the floor.
The broadcast at the undisclosed location appeared to be aimed at showing the Guard will continue its missile programme – despite the country’s nuclear deal with world powers and UN Security Council resolutions.
EU passes guidelines for labelling Israeli settlement products
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the European Union should be “ashamed” of its decision to label products made in Jewish settlements in the West Bank.
Brussels issued regulations that will require all 28 member states to apply the labelling to fresh fruits and vegetables, wine, olive oil, honey, eggs and poultry, organic food and cosmetics when they are sold in the EU, but will not apply to packaged foods and industrial non- cosmetic products.
However, one EU member has declared it will not be labelling products. Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó told a meeting of the Israel Council on Foreign Relations a few days later that the European Union’s decision to affix special labels on such products was “irrational.”
