3. To establish a permanent peace regime on the Korean Peninsula, end the current unnatural state of armistice, and establish a robust peace regime on the Korean Peninsula - a mission that must not be delayed any further.
These are are lofty and important goals for the region and the rest of the world.
WHERE DO THINGS STAND?
We are at a juncture in history where two world leaders of great pride and self-respect are confronting each other. One is the 36-year-old ruler of an ancient oriental empire; the other is the 72-year-old president of a relatively new nation that has, in a matter of only two centuries, become more influential than most nations have in millenia. As these two men look back at the history of the world, they should take a calm, reasoned look at how they might make the world
a better place; about how they might, in the world’s view, become heroes rather than pariahs. It seems there is a game of cat and mouse being played out on a global stage,
and still the United States and North Korea
have agreed to hold a summit meeting in Singapore on June 12, only three weeks before this article appears.
WHAT IS GOING TO HAPPEN?
If the hopes for this summit and the objectives of the Panmunjom Declaration are to be met, the foremost requirements are candor and communication, not challenges and threats.
The issue of denuclearization of the entire peninsula is crucial. One moment Kim Jong-Un hints that he might consider shutting down his nuclear plants, and the next week withdraws the suggestion after President Trump says unilateral and verifiable dismantling of these plants is non-negotiable, while his new National Secutity Advisor, John Bolton, says the U.S. will adhere to the “Libya model” on how North Korea should proceed with disarmament. In order not to disrupt its own efforts at reproachment with the North, South Korea decided to opt out of planned joint military exercises involving U.S. B-52 bombers.
Whether the June summit meeting will even happen is at best 50/50. If it does, what the
results will be is anybody’s guess. By the time you read this we may all know. L
