Jólakötturninn
Naughty Icelandic children get eaten by this gigantic, bloodthirsty feline.
But don’t worry. You’ll be safe if you worked diligently all year long and received new clothes for Christmas.
If the thought of this doesn’t get you to appreciate the ugly new Christmas sweater that your dowager auntie gave you, then you’re doomed!
Frau Perchta
This foul-tempered, bedraggled Alpine forest witch does not mess around. If your house is not in order, and, most importantly, if you haven’t woven your flax by the 12th day (January 6th), she’ll waste no time in paying you a visit where she’ll disembowel you, and leave a pile of dirt and garbage as a replacement for your guts. Not the most pleasant way to spend your Christmas season, that’s for sure, so get a-weavin’ y’all!
Italy’s La Befana
A nice witch! She arrives to bestow candy and gifts on Epiphany (January 5th) to all the good little children. However, if they have misbehaved, a nasty old lump of coal is what they’ll find in their stocking.
And... did you know that in ancient Norway, it was believed that witches and evil spirits came out on Christmas Eve, so people would hide all the brooms in their household to prevent the witches from being able to travel about and cause mischief!
