CONNECTING LIBRARIES INITIATIVE ANNOUNCEMENT MARMORA AND LAKES – ONTARIO LIBRARY SERVICE
The Ontario Library Service continues to work towards implementing the Connecting Public Libraries Initiative a $4.85M
dollar investment to upgrade broadband at approximately 50 public libraries in unserved and underserved communities
across the province. Today we are excited to announce the first connected public library site Marmora and Lake Public
Library. Through participation in this project connection speed has increased from an average of 9/6mbs to 50/10mbs.
As a result of participation in this initiative citizens of Marmora and Lake are able to access highspeed and reliable
internet at the public library providing greater community access to education and vital services, while creating
economic opportunity and contributing to post-pandemic economic recovery.
Quote from OLS CEO Mellissa D’Onofrio-Jones
“This investment demonstrates a recognition of the important role Ontario’s Public Libraries play in providing reliable
and effective internet access. This improvement will mean community members in Marmora and Lake have access to
reliable and effective internet that will increase their ability to participate in remote work and education. The Ontario
Library Service is excited to mark the occasion of the first site connected through this initiative and we look forward to
connecting other participating sites as the project progresses.”
The Connecting Public Libraries Initiative is administered by the Ontario Library Service on behalf of the Province of
Ontario. The investment will connect public library locations in the Province of Ontario improving connectivity to rural,
remote and First Nations communities.
