Sometimes the alarm bells rang, but nobody came - they were afraid. When leaving I discovered a scarcely visible sign on the iron portal.
I copied it and later I consulted it's meaning in a book written in argot, the Viennese thieves’ language widespread in the Balkans, - a dictionary to the secret language including symbols and signs. What I had copied was one of the many signs used by traveling folk under the topic “Signs Giving Information and Warnings". It’s meaning: “Here you’ll get nothing, leave the house in peace”. So Martha had come to an arrangement with the Gypsies! Was my concerned reflection. That meant no good. What might she has given in return? I wondered. The last night I spent at the house in Saint Paul I was plagued by nightmares: A demon, an extra-terrestrial creature with wild hair and ice-cold eyes had grabbed my throat with its claws and cut off my air but I was powerless, as though paralyzed - a poison was doing its work. I woke up drenched in sweat and I saw Martha leaning over me saying:
"I think you have got a fever"
I sensed strongly that something was utterly wrong - like she was trying to kill me. It was a warning and I had to leave, it finally dawned on me. Here was something to be looked into. What the hack was going on, I asked myself.
Ooo
