missed extra point. The defenses held firm for the rest of half as the teams exchanged punts, including one by the Enforcers’ Chris Lenti that pinned NYPD inside its own 10-yard line.
The Enforcers’ Adam Tapling came up big to stuff a screen pass and then break up a third-down pass attempt that forced New York to give up the ball. Momentum and CPD’s best field position of the day faded away quickly, however, as the Finest picked off an Enforcers pass. That would lead to an NYPD field goal to carry a 9-0 lead into halftime.
Tapling’s recovery of a squib kick to open the third quarter and a goal-line interception by Rick Richardson were bright spots in the second half. However, the fierce NYPD defense sty- mied any potential CPD scoring threats.
None of that, though, diminished the heart and courage com- ing from the Enforcers’ sideline.
“Keep fighting,” one coach encouraged.
“Defense, we gotta win this game,” a player shouted.
As the fourth quarter wound down, the Finest went to a
smash-mouth ground game to eat up yards and tack on a late touchdown.
The Enforcers put their disappointment aside in favor of sportsmanship as players from both teams exchanged hand- shakes and hugs at midfield before taking a knee together for a
postgame ceremony.
As he prepared to present the championship trophy to the
NYPD squad, NPSFL President Jeff Price told the players on both sides they proudly represented themselves as police offi- cers and football players during the hard-fought game that ben- efits many charitable causes.
