Nearly 15 years after Chicago Police Officer Donald Marquez died in the line of duty, his family continues to honor his legacy.
On Oct. 4, the Marquez family formally dedicated his Horse of Honor statue at its new home outside the school which bears his name on West 47th Street. The Officer Donald J. Marquez UNO Charter School was the first to be named for a Chicago Police Officer and its academics rank high among the network of UNO schools, according to Marquez’s brother, Dan.
“I thought it was going to be a perfect opportunity to honor my brother...to add some closure to a sad chapter in our lives,” Dan Marquez said.
Donald Marquez was lost in the line of duty on March 19, 2002 while serving a warrant on a man for housing violations in the Logan Square area. The 20- year veteran and other officers had just breached an apartment door to enter when the man began shoot- ing. Marquez, only 47, was fatally wounded in the shootout.
Dan Marquez’s company commissioned a horse to be part of the city’s Horses of Honor public art display
