around Chicago. The horse was painted by Chicago artist Nino Rodriguez and Marquez’s nephew, Tim. A number of eighth-grade art students from the school also helped in painting the horse with symbols that carried meaning to Donald Marquez.
It joined several other horses displayed around the City in 2014 to commemorate fallen or severely injured offi- cers with unique artistic representations. At the program’s conclusion, Marquez’s horse went into storage until the family purchased it and began talks with school officials about donating it to be displayed in front of the school.
That plan became reality when relatives at the ceremo- ny revealed the horse by removing three flags – one each
for the City of Chicago, Mexico and the White Sox – that also carried a measure of importance to his brother, Dan Marquez explained. The horse now stands vigil as a re- minder of the officer’s sacrifice, while also reinforcing for students what Police Officers represent.
“These are noble professionals. These are jobs taken by people...who want to serve and protect,” Dan Marquez explained.
The Marquez family will take an active role in sharing that message by visiting the school in the future to tell students about Officer Marquez, the history of the horse’s symbols and the virtues of Police Officers. d
