Activity through campaign season
Campaigns are in full swing across the state and country. The Legislature will not be in session until after the election when it will meet to consider vetoes from the governor. Until then, the primary focus will be on the many campaigns being waged throughout Illinois.
Since our last newsletter, the gov- ernor did amendatorily veto SB 440.
This bill received a large bipartisan vote in both
the House and Senate. This bill, among other R
the COLA portion. Even with the city against us, we were able to get 86 yes votes in the House and 39 yes votes in the Senate. To override the veto, we will need to hold the super majority mark of 71 and 36, respectively. Speaker Michael Madigan and President John Culler- ton were very supportive along with House Republican
Leader Jim Durkin. We will join the Chicago Fire- fighters Union in our effort to override this veto. This will take a huge bipartisan effort in order to
accomplish an override.
In other news, once again we have a new leg-
islator even before the election. As I told you last month, Palatine Republican Senator Matt Mur- phy has resigned his seat to go into the private sec- tor. His replacement is Mayor of Rolling Meadows Tom Rooney. One Irishman has retired and another one has
