Police Officer Juan M. Zuniga, Star #3805
Police Officer Alejandro Cabral, Star #4855
On July 6, Officers Juan M. Zuniga and Alejandro Cabral re- sponded to a call of a person shot on the 8400 block of S. Mackinaw. The victim had sus- tained multiple gun- shot wounds. Zuniga and Cabral, without hesitation, identified a critical gunshot wound to the victim’s lower chest that was actively bleeding.
Zuniga and Cabral immediately applied pressure to the
wound but discovered that it was ineffective, and the vic-
tim was continuing to lose blood. The officers then, having a medical kit available to them as part of the LEMART course, applied a QuikClot Combat Gauze to the gunshot wound while reassuring the victim to remain calm.
Once the Chicago FD paramedics arrived on the scene, Zuniga and Cabral were able to relay the information to them and the victim was then taken to Northwestern Hospital for further medical care.
There is little doubt that had Zuniga and Cabral not relied upon their training and taken immediate action as trained professionals, this 24-year-old citizen surely would have perished on the street.
It is with great appreciation that Fraternal Order of Police, Chicago Lodge 7, presents Officers Juan M. Zu- niga and Alejandro Cabral with Life Saving Awards. d
