Taking a bullet and foiling the crime
On July 21, 2017 Officers Victoria Men- doza and David Pe- rez responded to a robbery in progress with armed offend- ers on the scene. A description of the offenders had been

sent out over the radio, and the officers observed two subjects matching the description at 43rd Street and Ashland Avenue.
The officers exited their vehicle and approached the offenders. At that point, one of the offenders pulled a gun from his waistband and fired, striking Officer Men- doza in the leg. Officer Mendoza returned fire and at- tempted to pursue the fleeing offender but was too se- verely injured to continue.
Officer David Perez chased the offender, and the of- fender began shooting at Perez. After a brief chase, Offi- cer Perez was able to place the offender in custody. The
