Women helping women: DV officers impacting lives
Even if February weren’t Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month, it’s a safe bet that do- mestic violence officers around the city would still be doing the important work of educating women of all ages about the signs of danger in a relationship.
8th District
In the 8th District — and in several others — Chicago’s wom- en in blue step to the forefront to get those meaningful mes- sages out as often as possible. Over just a few weeks, the dis- trict’s DV and affinity officers connected with young women about teen dating violence through information tables at a Walgreens store in the neighborhood.
The district’s DV officer was at it again when she participated in a community baby shower held for 50 moms-to-be as part of an event organized by The Helen & Joe Foundation. With some of the mothers staying in shelters and being protected by court orders, the officers once again were able to spread information as part of the gathering that showed these women the caring and generous nature of the community.

CAPS officers in the 10th carried forward a similar mes- sage during a teen dating abuse 101 workshop held at Toman Library. The officers spoke with several people who went home with packets and other information ex- plaining that dating violence is more common than most realize, especially among teenagers.

Similarly, in the 12th, the “Love Is Respect” event gave the district’s DV officer a chance to connect and provide materials to build awareness about dating violence and the signs that teens should look for in their relationships.
Valentine’s Day in the 11th District looked inward, as the domestic violence subcom- mittee partnered with Deborah’s Place to host a “self-love” painting event. Women in the community showed off their artistic tal- ent to express feelings of gratitude.
