Healthy holiday treats for seniors in the 24th

Taking some of the guilt out of those holiday treats proved to be a popular topic for the 24th District CAPS third annual Healthy Cooking Christmas Class held in December at the Broadway Armory.
Coordinated with the Peterson Garden Project and the senior center based at the armory, dozens of older active adults from the Edgewater and Rogers Park neighbor- hoods took part in the two-and-a-half-hour demonstra- tion held inside the armory’s full chef’s kitchen, according to CAPS Officer Mayra Gomez.
“They did a chocolate mousse. They also did a cake,” Gomez said, noting both were made using alternative in- gredients. “We wanted to do healthy desserts because of the people who have trouble with sugar. Our seniors ben- efit from it.”
Attendees enjoyed coffee and fruit while chefs walked them through the recipes, copies of which everyone re- ceived to try at home. CAPS provided all the ingredients and donated a mixer to make sure the chefs were set up properly, Gomez said.
In the end, the seniors and police on hand – including District Commander Roberto Nieves, Sergeant Shawn Sisk and Officers Rich Daly and Zelideth Moore – “loved” the experience they shared over food, Gomez explained.
The class is another way the district works with its
community partners to provide op- portunities to, and support for, local se- niors. Wheth- er it’s educat-
ing them on scams, helping to arrange transportation to appointments or simply building a relationship with of- ficers, Gomez is proud of how CAPS keeps engaging with this segment of the population. And, the seniors are en- thusiastic.d
