The 6th District Community Policing O ce hosted its  fth annual back-to-school haircut event on Sept. 6 to help stu- dents look their best for their  rst day of school. Many of the barbers were police o cers who all volunteered to handle the grooming.
A line extended out the door and down Halsted Street, and more than 250 Chicago Public School students received free haircuts, along with school supplies and a lunch. The event aims to help families in need, but also to reconnect

“I believe the people that we reached out to have a little hesitancy, if you will, because of the things that are happen- ing nationally with the police,” said 6th District Sergeant Ernest Spradley. “It just gives the community a chance to see how the police department operates, not just in a regular role, but to see that we do o er programs.”
Of cer Williams opens heart and home to young mom
Walking into Olive Harvey College as a freshman is a dream come true for Alante Williams, but she knows she didn’t get here on her own. She credits her high school principal, biol- ogy teacher and especially her school resource o cer Vivian Williams, whoworked at Corliss High School where she was a student.
