Team effort in 3rd District
When there weren’t enough fathers for a recent fa- ther-daughter dance at Emmett Louis Till Math and Sci- ence Academy, four officers in the 3rd District CAPS office volunteered to suit up and escort several of the girls who attend the Woodlawn neighborhood elementary school.
And when administrators told police four wouldn’t be enough, 3rd District Sergeant Maudessie Jointer enlisted some good men she knew who would be happy to help.
“I started going through my family,” said Jointer.
She made calls, telling each male in her family, “I need you to put your suit on, your good-smelling cologne on, and I need you to escort these babies,” joked Jointer, a 3rd District CAPS officer.
On March 17, the 3rd District partnered with the Don Nash Community Center on 71st Street to host a game night for children. Held on a Friday night, it was intend- ed to get kids off the streets during the most dangerous time of the week from areas “we know can go up at any moment,” said Jointer. The district CAPS youth officer brought about $400 to $500 worth of games for the ap- proximately 35 grammar-school children, on top of offer- ing basketball, crafts and other activities.
A few lucky kids from the 3rd District won free tickets to see a Chicago Bulls game. Two officers worked with the
team to donate tickets.
Keeping the streets safe and helping her district is a
personal concern for Jointer, who also lives where she is stationed, she said.
“The beauty of it is,” she said, “I’m in the neighborhood I live in. This is so sweet. There is an absolute vested inter- est to get it right.” d
