Seniors and kids a focus in 9th District
Officer Cheryl Clark has been on the job for 22 years and serves as an officer with the 9th District CAPS office, where she likes to focus on the oldest members of the area.
“We treat them well. Some people don’t have people to treat them well, and we treat them well,” she said.
On March 10, the district hosted a luncheon at Armour Square Park in conjunction with the Chicago Park District. The day for seniors featured dancing and festive corned- beef sandwiches for lunch. Clark said a few local students volunteered to help run the annual event.
“It’s probably about 80 to 90 seniors who participate in it every year,” said Clark.
The CAPS office tries to hold many events around the year for seniors, Clark said. In the summer, they’ll take a group of them to a White Sox game.
The 9th District CAPS officers also do a lot of work with kids. Younger students get CPD coloring books, while old- er students tend to receive information on topics such as social media appropriateness, bullying and sexting.
And in early April, the district called on community members of all ages to stand together for a rally against violence. Local residents, members of the clergy and oth- er stakeholders in the neighborhood came together at East 75th Street and South Coles Avenue.
While combating violence remains high on everyone’s
list, Clark and her partner, Officer Sabrina King, keep fo- cusing on their district and its vulnerabilities, especially the seniors. Clark said they’ve built contacts within the senior community, something she deeply values.
“I love my job,” said Clark. “I love my seniors.” d
