Saluting K-9 Bob: The Labrador warrior
It was a solemn afternoon when Chi- cago Police Officers gathered to load the City’s much-loved and admired K-9, Bob, into a Department vehicle one last time to escort her to the Niles Animal Hospital. Police officers and friends gathered to salute Bob, the re- tired Homeland Security and CPD Lab- rador, as her handler, Police Officer Mike Walter, walked with her through the gathered crowd and into the animal hospital to be euthanized.
Officer Walter and K-9 Bob were part- ners in every sense of the word. They were there for each other ever since Walter traveled to Texas to meet and train with Bob when she was 2 years old. Bob worked for four years per- forming searches in airports and pub- lic transit stations. Last year, the K-9 was diagnosed with a brain tumor that gradually began to diminish her sight.
Bob is respected for her years of ser- vice to the city of Chicago, and remem- bered in a special way by Officer Walter, her handler and friend. Bob was 7 years old. d
