was watching over them. They left a presence there, pictures of Paul with the CPD Mounted Unit, with his troops at Daley Plaza, with the family and one memorable shot of him smil- ing.
Being there left Erin with a perspective about the sacrifice her husband made that speaks to a newfound source of her strength.
“It makes me realize that there are so many people in my position,” she observed. “I have talked to many of them and it has helped. I realized that Paul is not a wall somewhere. He’s in a much better place. He’s in my heart.”
Crystal Jimenez disclosed how emotional it was to see Sam- uel’s name inscribed on the Memorial wall, but how uplifting it was to see her kids make etchings of his name. Thousands of people who visit these hallowed walls each year during Police Week rub pencil on paper to render the fallen officer’s name as if it were bronzed. Crystal added that she would like to take these etchings and other mementos and make a scrapbook.
“Something I can take out to look at when I want to smile,” she detailed. “It’s emotional to see the women here, the spous- es. It’s like I feel their pain, but we’re here together.”
Kelly Gary illuminated how special, yet heartbreaking, it was to see Tess color at the wall to etch her father’s name. It was a moment in a cathartic week that she knows will help. But she is not exactly sure when. She, too, had a message for Chicago Police Officers.
“They all have gone above and beyond to make sure that we’re comfortable, that we’re content with everything going on,” she declared. “The kindness I’m seeing here is so over- whelming. It’s something wonderful.”
Clearly words that have inspired a thousand pictures.
