On November 27,
2017, at approximate-
ly 11:35 p.m., Officers
Thomas Surma and
Ursula Karcz were in the 11th District. They were sitting in
their vehicle at 23 N. Kenton Ave. when an offender com-
mitted an aggravated battery of a pregnant woman. The
offender came upon the officers sitting in their vehicle and shot into the car, grazing Officer Surma’s head. The offender fled and, although injured, Officer Surma and his partner called in a description of the offender and gave chase. Officers Sean Najm, Miles Furlet and Monica Calixto and Sergeant Curtis Wallace responded. The offender was located in a gangway, and the officers announced their office and told him to drop his weapon. The offender began shooting at the officers and, fearing for their lives, they returned fire and struck the offender. The officers re- quested an ambulance, but the offender had expired from his wounds.
Due to these officers’ brave dedication and courageous acts, a dangerous offender was removed permanently from the streets of the City of Chicago.
It is with great appreciation the Fraternal Order of Police Chicago Lodge 7 presents Officer Thomas Surma with the Award of Valor and Officers Ursula Karcz, Sean Najm, Miles Furlet and Monica Calixto and Sergeant Curtis Wallace with Distinguished Service Awards. d
