Turnovers in Springfield
While the legislature is just getting started with its 2020 session, there has already been some big news coming out of Springfield. For the first time in more than a decade, the Illinois Senate is begin- ning this year with a new Senate president.
Chicago Democrat John Cullerton has resigned his seat in the Senate, and the Democrats chose Senator Don Harmon from Oak Park to be the new president of the Senate. Don and I served in the Senate together. He is a smart and likable legisla-
tor, and we look forward to working with him in his new role. Senate President Harmon has chosen Senator Bill Cunning- ham to be the new Senate president pro tempore. Senator Cun- ningham has sponsored key legislation for the police. In Cul- lerton’s old district, Sara Feigenholtz has moved over from the
House to the Senate.
The scandal swirling around Chicago, some suburbs and the
Capitol has resulted in a guilty plea from former Senator Marty Sandoval. Former State Representative Luis Arroyo has a court date soon related to bribery charges, and the Mayor of Oak- brook Terrace has resigned. This whole mess looks like it will continue at least throughout the year, if not beyond.
Legislation is being filed that we continue to monitor and work on with legislators. The next focus is the governor’s budget address. In addition, there is a primary election on St. Patrick’s Day next month.
