 Chicago Lodge 7 Officer Awards
   Officer Carlos Castillo, Star #11674
Detective Timothy J. Murphy, Star #21293
On March 8, Officer Carlos Castillo was on his way to work. Officer Castillo, being aware of thefts from vehicles — specifically catalytic converter thefts — observed two offenders near a parked vehicle acting suspiciously.
Officer Castillo exited his vehicle and announced his office, at which time one of the offenders produced a hand- gun and shot at Officer Castillo but
missed his target. Officer Castillo, who did not retreat after being fired upon, returned fire and struck one of the of- fenders. Both offenders fled in a black Audi, which appeared hours later at St. Bernard’s Hospital in the 7th District dropping off the wounded offender. The wounded offender was placed into cus- tody after being identified.
Detective Timothy J. Murphy of Unit #181 conducted the followup investiga- tion and had the offender charged with
attempted murder of a police officer. Due to the quick action and trigger pull of Officer Castillo and the dogged and relentless investigation conducted by Detective Timothy J. Murphy, an armed and violent felon was removed from the streets of Chicago.
It is with great appreciation that the Fraternal Order of Police Chicago Lodge 7 presents Officer Carlos Cas- tillo and Detective Timothy J. Murphy with Distinguished Service Awards.
      Matthew Gill, Star #9812
Melissa Nelson, Star #8938
Nicholas Johnson, Star #17653
Amanda Angelo, Star #11107
On Feb. 26, Officers Matthew Gill, Melissa Nelson, Nicholas Johnson and Amanda Angelo, who work in the 19th District, responded to a check the well- being call for an attempted suicide, where the victim was thought to have slit his wrists and headed towards Lake Michigan.
The officers coordinated their ef- forts with the caller, who used “find my phone” to locate the victim. He was
found parked on the 4400 block of North Simmonds Drive. The officers cautious- ly approached the vehicle and observed the victim, who was unresponsive at this point, inside his vehicle with a large laceration on his left wrist and bleeding profusely.
The officers, who are LEMART- trained, sprang into action, applying a tourniquet and pressure bandage to the victim to stop the bleeding before the ambulance arrived on scene. Once transported to St. Joseph’s Hospital, the victim’s condition was stabilized. The
victim spoke with his rescuers and re- lated that he suffered from depression after living through a rough couple of years. The victim thanked the officers for their hard work. Thanks to their re- sourcefulness and teamwork, a victim was located and saved before he could succumb to his self-inflicted injuries.
It is with great appreciation that the Fraternal Order of Police Chica- go Lodge 7 presents Officers Matthew Gill, Melissa Nelson, Nicholas Johnson and Amanda Angelo with Life Saving Awards.
