Recording Secretary’s Report
Heroes get the job done
Our noble profession continues to be under at- tack both physically and verbally, as well as legis- latively. I have unfortunately been to two hospitals over the last few weeks, once concerning an Offi- cer who was shot off duty and, in another incident, an on-duty police-involved shooting. I want to tell you these brief stories and my thoughts on them.
In the first case, of one of our members who was shot off duty, we learned three of our other on-du- ty members rushed the injured Officer to the hos-
pital. This instant reaction saved their fellow Officer’s life. In another incident, Officers responded to a person shot. The Officers pursued on foot the offender, who had shot a victim at the Home Depot. During the chase, the offender shot one Officer, and his partner then dragged his injured partner to safety behind cover.
The offender was pursued by additional Officers, and the offender continually fired upon these Officers. The addition- al Officers were able to stop the offender from shooting and
place him into custody. In both instances, our members acted heroically. There is a common theme here: Our members will always get the job done. We will always win the day and help those in need.
The bravery and courage displayed in these events are the standard within our membership and throughout our law en- forcement profession. I choose to focus on the overwhelming acts of valor our members perform each day; make sure you do, too. Every day you put on that star and uniform you put the heavy weight of the City on your shoulders, and you pro- tect it from those who do evil and break our laws.
Forget the naysayers and the drama starters. Chicago Police Officers are heroes — these events prove it true again. We keep the fabric of our society together. Please, members, be alert and protect yourself, your partner and the good, law-abiding people. The goal is always to go home safely to your family after each tour. Brothers and Sisters, stay strong. We will get through this troubling time together.
