mail carrier’s heroics
When Shonda Lemon, a mail carrier, went to deliver mail at 89-year-old Helen Iwanski’s doorstep in January, she noticed the elderly woman’s pile had been mounting over a few days. Lemon knew that Iwanski stepped outside to retrieve her mail every day and had an inkling that something was off.
Lemon summoned police assistance to check on Iwanski’s well-being. Upon entering the home, 16th District officers found Iwanski on the floor, unable to get up after having fallen three days earlier.
Iwanski had fallen out of her chair and didn’t have a phone nearby. She was conscious but unable to move. After being rushed to the hospital, Iwanski underwent rehabilitation and made a full recovery before returning home in March.
Officers Nancy Ferreras and Stacey Johnson visited Iwanski with flowers and a handmade card with the message “Hoping you have a speedy recovery” on March 4.
“Thank god she’s doing good now,” Johnson remarked. “Three days is a long time. Without [Lemon], the worst could have hap- pened.”
Weekly meet and greet with 25th District officers
25th District officers started a weekly meet and greet series in March, walking block to block to distribute resources including flyers, food, hand sanitizer and masks. The officers teamed up with units like CAPS and the 2562 Team as well as several organizations, including Grace and Peace Church, Alliance of Local Service Orga- nizations (ALSO) and Broader Urban Involvement & Leadership Development (BUILD) to deliver the special packages of resourc-
