32 The Decorative Painter • ISSUE NO. 3, 2014
Penguins are a favorite subject among many artists. They are almost always portrayed as happy little creatures and are frequently used to symbolize icy, cold weather. If you
feel this ornament is too large to hang on a holiday tree, don’t worry! He will be happy anywhere you place him.
PREPARATION
Using the Krylon 18kt Gold Leafing Pen, apply a border to the edge of the ornament—around the entire perimeter. Basecoat the front and back of the ornament using the 3⁄4"an- gular brush with Sand. When the basecoat is completely dry, use the 1⁄2" angular to apply a thin layer of DecoArt Canvas Gel to the front of the surface. While the gel is wet, double- load the 3⁄4" angular with Lemonade and Foliage Green. The Lemonade should be the dominant color. To ensure this, dip the majority of the angular into Lemonade and the heel of the brush into Foliage Green. Slip-slap this over the gel. While still wet, use the Maxine mop to soften the colors, wiping the brush often on a clean towel as you proceed. Add a bit more of Foliage Green a little at a time around the outer edge of the surface and mop again. The colors should appear almost cloudy, with the darkest area on the outer edge and the light- est color moving toward the center. Allow to dry.
