Using graphite paper, transfer the main design. All details can be added after the basic penguin has been basecoated, highlighted, and shaded.

Basecoat the remainder of the outer body with two coats of Payne’s Grey. Highlight the left edge with Snow White+Payne’s Grey using the 1⁄2" angular.
EYES: Basecoat the eyes with Payne’s Grey. Using the 1⁄4" angular with Snow White, highlight the left side of each eye. Shade the eyes on the left and outside with water- thinned Payne’s Grey. Place two Snow White dots in each eye for sparkle. Stroke in eyelashes using the no. 1 liner with water-thinned Payne’s Grey.
BEAK: Basecoat the beak with two coats of Bright Orange. Shade down the left side with Georgia Clay. Add a dashed line down the center and nostrils using the no. 1 liner with Payne’s Grey.

SCARF: Basecoat the thicker sections with two coats of Fo- liage Green on the 1⁄4" angular. Shade with Foliage Green +Payne’s Grey (2:1) on the lower edges of the scarf. High- light the brim’s top edges with a Lemonade wash. Basecoat
the red sections of the scarf with Santa Red. Add thin lines of Snow White with the no. 18/0 liner. Add stripes to the green sections with the Gold Leafing Pen.
FOLIAGE
Basecoat the leaves with Foliage Green using the 1⁄4" an- gular. Add veins with the no. 18/0 liner loaded with water -thinned Hauser Medium Green. Highlight with water-thinned Snow White alongside the Hauser Medi- um Green edge. Use the 1⁄4" angular with Lemonade to highlight the leaves.
Basecoat the berries using the 1⁄3" angular with Santa Red and shade one edge with Cranberry Wine thinned to an ink consistency. Use the no. 18/0 liner with Lemonade+Foliage Green to create the stems. Allow to dry. Use the Sakura Pen-Touch marker to draw the spirals.
RIBBON AND BOW
Basecoat the ribbon and bow with Santa Red, and then highlight them with Snow White+Cranberry Wine (2:1). Shade with Cranberry Wine. Using the no. 18/0 liner with slightly thinned Snow White, add the lines on the ribbon and bow. Using the Sakura Pen-Touch marker add the spirals.
FINISHING
Once the painted surface is completely dry, spray with several light coats of DecoArt Americana Matte Varnis following manufacturer’s instructions.
