STOP LEARNING
by Marlene Fudge Education Committee Chair
This year, one focus of the Education Committee is growing our Educational Library on the SDP website. So far, there are 15 wonderful videos for the public including Tips and Techniques, Lessons and Demonstrations. For our members we have 19 videos and also nine amazing e-packets available. We are so excited to have many more videos coming in the next few months from your favorite artists, including many different mediums.
We are so fortunate to have the internet to access designs, tips and techniques that were just not available to us many years ago. I am a self-taught artist who picked
up my first paintbrush almost 25 years ago. I just loved to look for easy designs that I could paint to decorate my home for the holidays. I would pick up some
of the magazines available in the local craft stores and remember reading an advertisement for SDP. I joined right away. (Yup, I was hooked!) I remember reading every page of each issue of my Decorative Painter the day it arrived in my mailbox. I would look at all of the designs and think to myself, I wish I could paint that beautifully. I would give it a try and wish that my creation would look exactly like the picture. Of course, that rarely happened! But I never gave up. I would learn something from every painting that I tried. Even if I didn’t end up painting a design because I thought it was “too hard,” I would read all of the instructions anyway. And guess what, I learned something from every one of them. Over time my confidence grew and I didn’t worry as much about it looking just like the picture. How many times have you been in a class where everyone has the same teacher, the same paints, and the same pattern and every single one of them looks a little different?
I know for a fact that many of us have saved many, if not all, of our magazines over the years. And those well-worn pages have been looked through countless times. But how fun it is to look once again at those pages and find a design that seemed “too hard” many years ago, that you can now paint just like the picture!
I hope you will enjoy looking at all that is available on the website and in the Decorative Painter. There is so much that we can learn from and grow as artists, whether you are a beginner or an advanced painter. By taking classes, reading, watching videos and more, you can gain so much knowledge from so many different sources that are available today. Never stop learning!
