STEP BY STEP
Step 1 – To prep your surface, lightly sand and then seal it. Dry (a hair dryer comes in handy).
Step 2 – Choose colors using a color wheel. Your color scheme can be in pastels or dark colors, but should follow a legitimate color scheme by following the dotted guidelines. Remember that black and white are non-colors so can be used with your scheme as needed. (See examples)
Step 3 – Basecoat with a larger flat brush to get smooth, even strokes. Dry.
Step 4 – Use the soapstone or pencil to draw a large circle and then a small one in the center. These will be guidelines for your strokes and center.
Step 5 – First stroke – using the “stroke” brush
of choice, wet your brush a tiny bit (makes stroke painting smoother), dip into a little paint, and start at 12:00 to pull your stroke from the outside circle to just inside the center circle. If using a round brush, start with the tip of the brush, push down as you pull toward the center to make your stroke wider, and then come up on the brush tip as the stroke goes into the center circle...much easier than it sounds. Practice on a piece of paper if you like. And remember that a misguided stroke can be easily wiped clean with a damp paper towel or moist Q-tip.
Step 6 – Repeat at 6:00, and then 3:00, and 9:00. Fill in the spaces between. This helps to keep strokes straight and rather evenly spaced. You can even vary the end lengths a tiny bit for more interest.
Step 7 – Use a dry small Texture-it brush or Deerfoot brush to tap in the center with your choice of color. Wipe the brush onto paper towel, and then sideload it in another color choice to tap into the center at one side, blending a little between. Add a light (or white) highlight at 2:00 if you like.
Step 8 – Work with the colors in your palette as well as black to add stylus dots around the center.
Step 9 – Dry. Proudly sign your work. For a rustic look, sand the edges. Varnish by spraying, or brush on varnish with a large flat brush.
