Create this if you’re a beginner, a professional needing projects for a sale, or use it as a chapter project for paint-ins or open houses. This is my “go-to” project if I have a new (never painted before) student. I have never (I repeat – NEVER) had a failure!
I’m writing the directions as I would teach a beginner.
Painter’s Checklist
SURFACE
Anything small, flat and round. These can be flat ornaments, small boxes, or wood disks. I search the Goodwill stores for stemware and then have lids made for them.
PALETTE
I offer any paint from my DecoArt Acrylic paint rack. The key is to edu- cate on making the correct choices. To do this, I show a student a color wheel, and in simplest terms, I show them to follow the dotted lines to choose colors. In many ways, decorative painting is a science...no need to be “born an artist!”
BRUSHES
Show examples of different kinds of brushes and how they make differ- ent kinds of strokes, i.e., a small flat makes square end petals, a filbert makes round end petals, and a round makes pointed ends. A small Scharff Texture-it brush or Deerfoot makes a textured center.
SUPPLIES
Sandpaper, sealer, a palette (for a crowd, use paper plates), soapstone, pencil or chalk pencil, stylus, paper towel, varnish (spray or brush on), brush cleaner.
