 STEP-BY-STEP
STEP 1
FIRST LAYER OF PAINT
Flowers — Fill in the petals with Titanium White using a #6 flat brush and Carbon Black No. 1+Ultramarine Blue (1:1) to fill in the center of
the flower and the ring around that center. Thin down some Genesis Yellow as much as possible and paint the insides of the flower petals. Thin down some Ultramarine Blue as much as possible and gently
work that color from the center of the flower, outwards, for a gradient effect. The flower petals should, overall, appear Titanium White, but with subtle shading to differentiate the inside of the flower from the outside of the flower.
Berries — Use a #2 flat brush to draw in the stems of the berries with Titanium White. Then, use that same brush to fill the berries in with Genesis Red.
Leaves — Use Genesis Yellow+Ultramarine Blue (4:1) to fill in the leaves with a brilliant green. Use a #2 flat brush to draw in the stems with Raw Sienna.
Birds — Use Ultramarine Blue+Titanium White+Genesis Red (2:3:1) to fill in the birds.
Seed Pods — Fill the seed pods in with Raw Sienna+Yellow Ochre+Raw Sienna+Genesis Yellow (1:1:1:1) and fill the holes of the seed pods in with Carbon Black No. 1+Ultramarine Blue (1:1).
Bells — Use a touch of Carbon Black No. 1+Ultramarine Blue (1:1) and thin it way down to fill in the bells. Draw in the lines inside the bells with a more opaque Carbon Black No. 1+Ultramarine Blue (1:1).
Branches — Simply fill the branches in with Raw Sienna.
After completing this first layer of paint, place the board carefully in the oven to heat-set the paint at about 170 degrees F for 11 minutes. Use caution in removing the board when the oven timer goes off.
