Locate the “x” shown on the line drawing. Mix Splendid Gold+Glazing Medium (1:1) (or prepare a wash). Stroking outward from the “x” draw gold outward like wheel spokes. After the gold dries, trim halo edge with Lamp Black. Edge with a rim of undiluted gold, starting in center and working outward. The final highlight on rim is Light Buttermilk.
THE TOKEN
Both the holly and rose use the same palette and the lights and darks are placed in the same general location. The leaves are Hauser Green Medium, Black Green and Citron Green. The highlighted edges are Light Buttermilk. The
holly berries and rose are first painted with True Red. The black background is allowed to create the darkest value. The highlights are a mixture of True Red and Cadmium Yellow. The final highlight is Light Buttermilk. They are tiny and just impressions. Don’t overthink; they are tiny. See Figure 11.
EVALUATE
Compare your work to both Figures 3 and 4 again. Check symmetry again. Check and correct as necessary.
ALL THAT JAZZ AND PIZAZZ
There are a few ways to make this your own. Some transparent Cadmium Yellow or Splendid Gold can be washed in a few areas of the angel’s skin or garb. Highlighted areas are best. Diluted Burnt Sienna dots (freckles) can be added to the angel’s cheeks. Blot while wet.
FINISHING
Protect the box inside and out with two coats of
DuraClear Soft Touch Varnish.

A friend bought Leslie Smith a painting lesson as a Christmas gift in 1992; he saw an ad at a craft store which said that painting could relieve stress.
