MARLENE KREUTZ cda by Melinda Barnes
Marlene was born and raised in Minnesota and has been interested in drawing and painting all of her life. In the early 80’s, she took her first painting classes and later started teaching and designing her first instructional packets. Marlene has designed well over 300 packets! In addition to her line of pattern packets, she has been featured in many magazine articles and has authored and co-authored numerous decorative painting books.
Marlene’s first SDP convention was in Columbus, Ohio in 1987. At the Dallas convention in 1988, Marlene began teaching classes. From then on, she taught at all conventions with the exception of Pittsburgh in 1994. At the 1992 Kansas City convention, Marlene started the tradition of exhibiting at all SDP conventions with the exception of one. This would not have been possible without the support of her husband of over fifty years. Al, Marlene’s husband, is never very far away during classes and conventions. Al sets up the class projector and mans their booth. Of course, you will find them both setting up and tearing down their booth at the shows.
Marlene earned her Certified Decorative Artist (CDA) award in 2004. Then in 2019, the Priscilla Hauser Award for Business and Industry was presented to Marlene’s Folk Art, Marlene and Al Kreutz. This was so exciting and special for them both.
Marlene is a member of two local chapters, Twin Cities Decorative Artist Guild and Prairie Flowers Decorative Painters. Marlene’s favorite painting medium is acrylic. Her style is unique in that she combines layers of floated color, dry brushing and stippling to create a realistic effect. Her favorite subject matter has always been flowers, but has included many birds, fish and whimsical designs. In recent years, she has added pen, ink and pencil shading to her design techniques. With this technique, she has created pattern packets and authored two books, Marlene’s Ink Creations and Marlene’s Ink Therapy.
