PREPARATION
Painting the Background Washes
Be sure to refer to the technique sheet, photos, step-by- steps, and shading guide for guidance and placement of color. Each base color is applied in the form of a very light wash. Generously water down your paint to create a watercolor effect. If you happen to go outside the lines, quickly remove the color with a damp cotton swab and pat the area with a paper towel. When the instructions call for a color mix and gives a ratio, squeeze small dots of color that are the same size onto your palette. For instance, if the instructions call
for Primrose + Warm White at a 1:2 ratio, put one (1) dot of Primrose and two (2) dots of Warm White on your palette. Mix the colors well with a palette knife.
COLOR MIXES
Prepare a wet palette with the colors listed + the following color mixes:
Red Mix: Napthol Crimson + Mustard Seed (2:1) Green Mix: Pine Green + Mustard Seed (2:1)
LET’S PAINT
STEP 1
Lightly transfer the pattern lines with a piece of grey graphite onto watercolor paper. Since the lines should be thin, use the small end of a stylus or a sharp pencil to transfer the lines. Check the transfer so your lines don’t become too dark. Using an eraser and graphite pencil, go back and carefully erase and correct any lines that are too dark or out of place.
Use a round brush to apply a light wash of Mustard Seed. Water down the color and lightly wash the carrot nose, stars, and candy bag. Do a careful, quick pat with a clean paper towel to pull up a bit of the color and create texture. Let dry. With the Red Mix, lightly wash the candy canes and scarf (work around the spots on the scarf). Do a quick pat and let dry.
Use Mouse to lightly wash the hat trim and ball at the end of the hat. Lightly wash the green checks on the hat with the Green Mix. Use Carbon Black to very lightly wash the black checks on the hat, and both eyes. Do a quick pat and let dry.
